The Acting Attorney General, Head of the Special Investigation Unit, stated that the unit had received 15 complaints during the second third of this year, in which allegations varied between torture, ill-treatment, and the use of excessive force by members of the Public Security Forces, and the unit had taken the necessary legal measures in all complaints.
Regarding the statistics of the unit’s work during the aforementioned period: The unit heard the statements of 45 complainants and witnesses, while it interrogated 25 accused and suspects from members of the Public Security Forces and presented 10 of the complainants to the Forensic Medicine and Psychological Support Division.
Regarding what the unit accomplished during the same period: The unit has completed its investigations into a person’s allegation that he was subjected to verbal abuse by a member of the Public Security Forces while performing his job, and ordered that the papers be referred to the Military Courts Department at the Ministry of Interior to impose the appropriate disciplinary penalty on the accused, due to the proven legal violations against him that are incompatible with his military job. It does not eligible to be presented to criminal trial.
With regard to the Unit’s follow-up of cases referred to the competent courts; On May 7, 2023, the Minor Criminal Court issued a ruling fining a member of the Public Security Forces, for committing the crime of assaulting others while performing his job duties.
In the same context, a disciplinary penalty was issued depriving a member of the Public Security Forces of his annual bonus, in a case that the unit had previously ordered to be referred to the Department of Military Courts at the Ministry of Interior to impose the disciplinary penalty.
