Mr. Mohammed Khalid Al-Hazaa, Acting Attorney General and Head of the Special Investigation Unit received, in his office today, Lord Tariq Ahmed, Special Representative of the Prime Minister and Minister for South Asian, United Nations and Commonwealth Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development in the United Kingdom, in the presence of Mr. Stuart Summers, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the United Kingdom in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

During the meeting, the role of the Special Investigation Unit in protecting human rights in the criminal justice system, as an independent and unique judicial body at the region level, was reviewed. Lord Ahmed was also briefed on the unit’s internal structure, the division of its people, and the updates made by the unit to its legal structure; In order to continue carrying out its work in accordance with international conventions, standards and protocols, including as the most important element of the Istanbul Protocol to investigate and document cases of torture and ill-treatment.

The meeting also discussed ways to enhance cooperation, with the aim of exchanging experiences and supporting and developing the capabilities of the members of the Special Investigation Unit, considering the strong and distinguished relations between the two countries, which extends for many years of fruitful coordination and close cooperation in various fields.

On the conclusion of the meeting, the Special Representative of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom praised the Special Investigation Unit and the role it plays in protecting human rights, praising the Kingdom of Bahrain’s to implement its constitutional principles and its quest to guarantee human rights and fundamental freedoms, by enacting the necessary legislation and establishing mechanisms that protect human rightsand strengthening those rights in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the law.
