The Ombudsman and the Special Investigation Unit organized an interactive workshop on “independent investigation mechanisms” over a week, starting from Sunday, November 28, 2021, at the Institute of Judicial and Legal Studies, in cooperation with the UK Embassy in Bahrain and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which was attended by Members of the regulating agencies and the Department of Internal Audit and Investigations at the Ministry of Interior.
This workshop was attended by specialized experts from the Independent Office of Police Conduct in the United Kingdom (IOPC), and it covered important topics, most notably the methodology that the Office follows in its investigations, especially in the field of investigation of the use of force and evaluation of evidence. These topics dealt with identifying detailed procedures such as collecting evidence and hearing witness statements, elements to verify in cases of contact with police officers, standards of excellence, drawing conclusions, and organizational learning.
The holding of this advanced workshop is part of a series of workshops and training courses held through cooperation between the Ombudsman, the Special Investigation Unit, the UK Embassy in Bahrain and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with the aim of exchanging experiences and identifying the best practices used in the work ofOmbudsman and police oversight bodies, and to keep pace with the functional and administrative skills that are constantly evolving from the reality of practical experiences and according to the results of real investigations and the evaluation reviews.
