The Kingdom of Bahrain is alone at the regional level with specialized mechanisms to ensure the protection of human rights in the criminal justice system

Mohammed Khalid Al-Hazaa, Acting Attorney General and Head of the Special Investigation Unit, affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain always adheres to its constitutional principles in various fields, especially human rights, in the belief that respecting and consolidating these rights leads to the establishment of the values ​​of integrity and equality, which results in an environment that enables people to practice their affairslife and achieve its goals and ambitions within a framework of security and stability arising from the rule of law.

He added that the Kingdom of Bahrain, in this context, has established unique mechanisms at the level of the region, including the Special Investigation Unit, aimed at protecting human rights in the criminal justice system, and achieving several principles, including the rule of law and ensuring accountability, in line with international standards followed in in that regard, and this reflects the Kingdom’s to achieve sustainable development goals, especially Goal 16 related to peace, justice and strong institutions.

This came during a lecture presented by the head of the unit today via video communication technology entitled (Establishing the Special Investigation Unit, its terms of reference and the international standards followed in its work), which was organized in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, with the participation of members of the Public Prosecution and Public Prosecution agencies from all Gulf countries and representatives of The General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Al-Hazaa reviewed the experience of the Kingdom of Bahrain in establishing the Special Investigation Unit, the nature of its work, its objectives and the legal competencies entrusted to it, and the reduction in the crime rates it deals with by more than 70 percent, and its applications to international standards, especially the principles of the Istanbul Protocol to investigate and document cases of torture and ill-treatment. This is its commitment to applying transparency standards by announcing its procedures and publishing its periodic statistics and an annual report on its work. While the head of the unit affirmed its full commitment to exercising its responsibilities in the care of human rights and ensuring the rights of individuals in the justice system in accordance with the relevant constitutional and international principles.
