Within the framework of constant communication between the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and national institutions and mechanisms concerned with the enforcement and implementation of the law and protection of human rights, SIU received a notification from the Public Prosecution and the Ombudsman Office, alleging that some inmates were subjected to physical abuse during the inspection measures by members of the Public Security Forces at the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre in Jaw.
SIU has launched an investigation after being notified of the incident by listening to the inmates’ statements. It also has assigned the Unit’s forensic physician to conduct a medical examination while ordering the inclusion of all inmates’ medical reports, if any, and the recordings of the security cameras at the Centre relating to the incident. Further, the Judicial Police Division has been designated to investigate the incident and uncover its circumstances to reach the truth. The investigation is currently under process.
