The Attorney General, Dr. Ali Fadhul Al-Buainain, attended the closing ceremony of the national training programme to enhance the capabilities of those concerned with the protection of human rights in the criminal justice system. It was held at the Crown Plaza Hotel this morning, in the presence of Mr. Firas Gharabia, the resident representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and a number of officers from the Public Prosecution, Judges, members of the public security forces, heads of national mechanisms, institutions and agencies concerned with the protection and promotion of human rights.

During his speech at the closing ceremony, His Excellency the Attorney General affirmed that the organisation of this training programme by the Special Investigation Unit in cooperation with the Royal Academy of Police and the Judicial and Legal Studies Institute has demonstrated the solidarity and interdependence of national institutions to achieve Bahrain’s future vision for the advancement of human rights. He also added that it has become the nucleus of continuous and effective cooperation between all institutions. relevant national agencies, to create an integrated work system that works on the optimal application of the highest standards and principles of human rights. This is in light of the successful cooperation with UNDP, which has long been a partner in the national efforts, to strengthen and develop capabilities and acquire expertise.

Furthermore, His Excellency pointed out the importance of promoting human rights in the criminal justice system, being the way to the rule of law. He stated that it will only be achieved by continuing the approach based on education and awareness for all those involved in law enforcement and application. This is to keep pace with the national and international principles and standards governing human rights at all levels, especially when using the legal powers entrusted to them, in a way that ensures that they carry out their work in accordance with international approved practices.

The Acting Advocate General and Head of Special Investigation Unit, Mr. Khalid Alhazza, discussed the outputs of the national training programme, including the continuation of appropriate training for those charged with law enforcement and application on practical problems in criminal cases. This is to be done by continuing to hold and implement specialised legal training programs to achieve Bahrain’s future vision for advancement human rights. Also, work to achieve the goals of Bahrain’s National Human Rights Plan (2022-2026), especially with regard to developing the roles of national protection and restorative justice mechanisms. He also added that the programme was attended by about 900 participants, and its axes dealt with 50 topics, in which elite national and international experts took part, with more than 80% of Bahraini experts. He also referred to the prominent presence of Bahraini women in the events of the programme, as the percentage of female speakers reached 30%.

At the end of the ceremony, His Excellency the Attorney General honored the organisers of the programme and all the session directors and speakers, for their valuable efforts to complete its axes. He expressed his pride in the distinguished experiences and competencies possessed by the Kingdom of Bahrain in various fields of judicial, executive and legal work, which were manifested in the events of this programme.

It is worth noting that the national training program to enhance the capacities of those concerned with the protection of human rights in the criminal justice system was launched at the end of October of last year, and lasted for six months, with the participation of a legal and human rights group of judges, members of the Public Prosecution office, members and affiliates of national institutions, mechanisms and agencies concerned with the protection of human rights. In the presence of many members of the Public Security Forces from various security and correctional departments and centers, as well as participants from the Shura Council and the House of Representatives, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Social Development, Legislative and Legal Opinion Commission, Supreme Council for Women, and related civil society organizations.
