Mohamed Khaled Al Hazzaa, Acting Advocate General and Head of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), received Mr. Mazen Shuqura, the Regional Representative of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for the Middle East and North Africa, at SIU’s headquarters.
At the beginning of the meeting, Al Hazzaa welcomed the Regional Representative, appreciating the ongoing cooperation between Bahrain and the United Nations in ensuring respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and achieving development.
Al Hazzaa outlined the tasks and competencies of SIU as a unique mechanism in the region, highlighting its essential role in safeguarding human rights within Bahrain’s criminal justice system in line with relevant international standards. He pointed out the significant decline in the complaints received by SIU, reflecting Bahrain’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, precisely Goal 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions.
