The Attorney General, Dr. Ali bin Fadhul Al Buainain, received in his office this morning, in the presence of Counselor Wael Rashid Bu Alai, the Assistant Attorney General; Mr. Mohammad Khalid Al-Hazaa, Acting Attorney General, Head of the Special Investigation Unit, on the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Special Investigation Unit.
During the meeting, the work progress of the unit over the past decade and the procedures it took in the legal and human rights abuses that it had taken hold, in addition to the development and training and educational programs it carried out, as well as aspects of its cooperation internally and externally with national and international bodies related to human rights, were reviewed and the result of that cooperation.
The Attorney General praised the efforts made by the head and members of the Special Investigation Unit in partnership with all national mechanisms and institutions concerned with human rights in order to enforce the rule of law and achieve criminal justice, which resulted in a significant decrease in the number of crimes of torture and ill-treatment year after year, until the percentage of decrease reached 77%; This reflects the unit’s gaining the community’s confidence and achieving the purpose of its establishment, and its success in dealing transparently and firmly with all legal and human rights abuses that it has undertaken over the years of its work, and it also reflects the legal awareness of members of the public security forces in light of constitutional and international principles.
